Celebrating his 95th birthday, Stagg is inundated with fan mail congratulating him on this momentous milestone. Stagg was an actual team member of the very first All-American football team of 1888. Remarkably, he was also a star baseball pitcher, helping win five championships for Yale.
But Amos Alonzo Stagg’s most lasting influence will forever remain in football. He invented the tackling dummy. He also invented plays such as the man-in-motion and the T-formation. He played and coached football, baseball, and basketball until the age of 96, retiring in Stockton, California after a truly monumental life.
